the average user should be aware of the difference between an application and the data that it produces. know what files are, how to save them and how to find them later. realize the importance of backing up data and keeping installation disks and serial numbers in a safe place.
practice caution when getting any unusual email, especially dire warnings of the latest viral outbreak. when on the web, do not click on pop up offers-there are far too many ways for unscrupulous persons to install software without your permission. do install and use an alternate browser, (sorry bill your product may be dominant but its security is swiss cheese). firefox, chrome or opera for example. some even like safari.
since the development of the gui or graphical user interface, all such software only serves to insulate the user more than i think is necessary.
for example the windows and mac software operating systems have many more problems in common than you would think - the newest versions from microsoft only more so. there are some books out there listing the most common problems you can have with your computer. there are mac and pc versions and you could almost switch the covers and still find the advice inside useful. the awful truth is that all (yes, all) such multitasking software with the ability to run tasks in the background can be compromised and the authors of such software, such as adware and malware, are getting better at quietly installing and hiding, using your computer without you knowing it, to do things like collect information about you and everyone that you communicate with.
